Driving a Transformation to Energy Efficient Buildings

Thursday Dec. 1

A joint side-event hosted by the U.S. Green Building Council and the Business Council for Sustainable Energy. USGBC, Johnson Controls, and government delegates will discuss strategies to bring efficient buildings to scale in growing countries including an overview of the Policy Toolkit for Energy Efficient Buildings and approaches to Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs) in the building sector.

How Will Climate Finance Work in 2012?

An official World Business Council on Sustainable Development (WBCSD) side event. Climate finance is critical for the scaling up of low-carbon investment and for low-carbon growth. How is this working now, and how Durban affect it, and what's in store for 2012? Join this discussion which will include business, finance, and government panelists.

Energy Efficient Buildings and Communities for Sustainable Development: Voices from South Africa

Saturday Dec. 3

A joint side-event hosted by the World Green Building Council and Bioregional. WorldGBC, Bioregional, the Green Building Council of South Africa and others will explore rating systems, frameworks and public policy tools for accelerating green buildings and communities in South Africa. Panelists will discuss intersections between energy demand, efficient buildings, and climate change, and how green buildings act as tools for sustainable development.

Action on Energy Efficiency in the United States and on the Global Stage

Wednesday Dec. 7

A U.S. Green Building Council and U.S. Government event to highlight public policies and private sector actions on climate change with a focus on efficient buildings. Panelists will discuss national initiatives and international cooperation such as the Clean Energy Ministerial.

Cato Manor Green Home Retrofit Tour and Reception

South Africa's First "Green Street"

Monday Dec. 5

The Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA) in partnership with the British High Commission and the Government of Australia is undertaking a green and energy-efficient retrofit of 30 low-income homes in Cato Manor, Durban. The GBCSA and sponsors invite you to see their progress on this legacy-project by joining them for an organized tour followed by a reception with food, drink, and live music. This project is a real example of how green buildings and homes reduce greenhouse gas emissions while improving quality of life, and will leave a lasting impact on the local community long after COP-17.

Time: 5:00-9:30pm

Place: Durban. Transportation will be provided to the site. Buses leave the Transport Hub at the ICC at 5:30pm.

Site Tour of the Green Star-Certified Nedbank Ridgeside Green Building

Tuesday Dec. 6

See first hand what a top-of-the line green building looks like in South Africa just outside of Durban. Facilitated by the Green Building Council of South Africa, the tour of the 4-Star building will be led by the project's designers, architects, and engineers to explain the green features. Drinks and light fare will be provided by Nedbank and Zenrop.

Time: 5:00-9:00pm

Place: Umhlanga. Transportation will be provided to the office. Buses leave the Transport Hub at the ICC at 5:30pm.

World Climate Summit

Saturday Dec. 3-Sunday Dec. 4

The second annual World Climate Summit will provide a platform for business-focused climate change solutions. The two-day summit supports an active community of global leaders and dealmakers as they develop new business models, broker public-private partnerships, scale projects, transfer technologies, and establish replicable financing mechanisms. Throughout the conference plenaries, workshops, and networking sessions will explore challenges and solutions, with a strong media presence. Climate Action Networking Reception and High-level Debate on Cities of the Future

Wednesday Dec. 7

The World Green Building Council, ICLEI, and the World Business Council on Sustainable Development are among the partners of the COP-17 Climate Action event, which will host UN governing bodies, Ministers and global government representatives, legislators, regulators, NGOs and global business leaders. To kick off the event WorldGBC, ICLEI and the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy are participating in a high-level panel discussion exploring how cities can lead the way on climate action. Remarks from Achim Steiner, Executive Director of UNEP, HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco, and Mike Brown, CEO of Nedbank.
